Hello there, I'm

Punith Basavaraj.

I turn ideas into software.

I’m a Software Engineer and MS Computer Science student at USC with 3+ years of experience at Siemens Healthineers. I focus on building scalable systems and applying distributed technologies and artificial intelligence to create solutions with real-world impact.

About Me

I build software that performs when the stakes are highest. Over three years at Siemens Healthineers, I architected backend systems powering hospitals worldwide, from a remote update platform that automated patch delivery across a global fleet of medical devices, to event-driven monitoring services that kept critical imaging systems running. Most recently at Medtronic, I built data pipelines on AWS serving multiple downstream applications and integrated Visual AI testing into production workflows.

But I don't just build for scale, I build for curiosity. I've shipped a full-stack artist discovery platform on GCP, engineered a distributed file storage system in Go on AWS, and fine-tuned language models with LoRA and RAG to detect mental health signals in social media. For me, the best engineering sits at the intersection of hard problems, creative thinking, and real-world impact.

I'm currently finishing my Master's in Computer Science at USC, going deeper into distributed systems, applied ML, and backend architecture. I'm looking for a team that moves fast, tackles meaningful problems, and believes great software can change how the world works.

Where I've Worked

Software Engineer Co-op @ Medtronic

Jan 2026 - May 2026

  • Developed cloud-native data pipelines that parsed and normalized patient records at scale, powering multiple downstream applications with faster, more reliable data access
  • Integrated Applitools Visual AI with Python framework, building API wrappers and automation utilities for visual regression testing
  • Implemented Java utilities to standardize test data generation and environment setup across automated workflows

Teaching Assistant @ USC Marshall School of Business

Jan 2025 - Present

  • Mentored undergraduates in optimization, simulation modeling, and dynamic programming, reinforcing both technical foundations and applied problem-solving
  • Guided students on case studies and analytics projects, bridging classroom concepts with real-world business applications

Software Development Engineer @ Siemens Healthineers

July 2021 - Feb 2023

  • Engineered a remote software update service in C++ that deployed patches seamlessly to 1,000+ medical devices across diverse hospital networks, saving ~€500K annually by eliminating manual interventions
  • Developed a C# real-time system health monitor that tracked device status and automated alerts, reducing downtime by ~60% in mission-critical healthcare environments
  • Developed a Configuration Manager and Data Serializer using C++, XML schema validation, and an Angular UI, enabling atomic configuration updates, data marshaling, and automated consistency enforcement across microservices
  • Collaborated cross-functionally with global teams to design reliable APIs and ensure interoperability, strengthening security and compliance in regulated healthcare software

Software Engineer Intern @ Siemens Healthineers

Feb 2021 - June 2021

  • Contributed to a modular automation testing framework in C#, applying factory patterns and SOLID principles to improve test scalability and maintainability
  • Enhanced collaboration between developers and QA by designing parameterized BDD step definitions in SpecFlow and strengthening the .NET mock framework, improving reliability and reducing redundancy in test scripts

Front End Intern @ Kavach Networks

May 2020 - July 2020

  • Enhanced user experience for the Visitor Management System by building responsive React components, reducing visitor registration time
  • Improved application security by integrating backend authentication and role-based access control, cutting unauthorized access by 30%

Some Things I’ve Built

Artistry Hub

Artistry Hub

ArtistryHub is a responsive full-stack web app that connects artists with a wider audience. It supports 10,000+ artworks, with features like dynamic search, favorites, and profiles. I built a scalable Node.js/Express backend on Google Cloud with MongoDB Atlas, and implemented secure JWT-based authentication with persistent login sessions.
  • Angular
  • Node.js
  • TypeScript
  • Express
  • MongoDB
  • GCP
Distributed File Store

Distributed File Store

This project is a distributed storage system I built to provide secure file uploads, versioned retrieval, and metadata management. It achieves ~99% data availability using chunk replication with PostgreSQL-backed services. To improve performance and scalability, I integrated MinIO object storage and optimized gRPC communication between Dockerized microservices.
  • Go
  • PostgreSQL
  • MinIO
  • gRPC
  • Docker
Transfer Learning Waste Image Classifier

Transfer Learning Waste Image Classifier

Built a computer vision pipeline to classify waste into 9 categories with 90%+ accuracy, using transfer learning with ResNet50, ResNet100, EfficientNetB0, and VGG16. Improved model generalization with advanced augmentations (cropping, rotation, zooming, flipping) and regularization (early stopping, L2, dropout), achieving a test F1 score of 0.91.
  • Python
  • Keras
  • TensorFlow
  • OpenCV
